Joining Us#

The Open-Source Projects Working Group supports the Casualty Actuarial Society’s open-source initiatives, helping members build, maintain, and share actuarial tools and research code.

Design Philosophy#

The Casualty Actuarial Society has accumulated over a century’s worth of knowledge, available through its extensive research library. However, much of this information has never been made available in the form of open source packages. By transforming theory into code, the Open-Source Projects Working Group aims to build practical solutions for the modern era.

While the chainladder package has received much of our attention, our goal is to design libraries for other areas of practice. These would include, but are not limited to:

  • Pricing

  • Workers’ compensation

  • Reinsurance

  • Capital modeling

Many of these packages will be the first open-source libraries released in their respective practice areas, and by volunteering with the working group, you have the opportunity to make a positive impact on the actuarial profession.
